Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump

David Bottoms wrote a very unique poem called Shooting Rat at the Bibb County Dump.
"Shot in the head, they jump only once, lie still

like dead beer cans."
This quote has a very interesting simile in it that I found as a great description. He compares dead rats to the empty bear cans that he is drinking. The poem overall though was kinda wierd, definantly different and really had no point. But isn't that the way with alot of artwork? I mean what really is the point of writing poetry or a novel or anything? Do you really benefit that much from doing so? Sure you make money, but you can always find a way to make money. Maybe you feel good by giving people your work to look at and learn from. But is it all really necesarry? The pain staking hours and days and months of writing something that only a few hundred people may read? Sure some work is great and renoun but not all is thta wonderful. So is there really a point to even writing a poem like "Shooting Rats at the Bibb Coutny Dump"? No probably not for most people. But for those who do write the answer is simple. They write because they enjoy it, because it makes them hapy.
