World War II and Vietnam
Monday, November 13, 2006
Everyone who can get online knows at least something of the Vietnam War and World War II, though I doubt that very many people my age have read or even heard of Slaughter-house Five by Curt Vonnegut. Vonnegut tends to show dislike towards war in general. In his book he makes battles seem unimportant and worthless. History sees World War II as much more successful than Vietnam. The country was more supportive and the result much more noticeable. World War II freed the Jews and Polish and other captives. It ended Nazi rule and made strong alliances between nations. Vietnam only saw death and disease, jungle fighting and hellish battles. Popular culture views World War II as a more beautiful and honorable war while Vietnam was just a large mistake. This is probably due largely to the fact that in World War II the United States was actually helping out Europe. While in Vietnam they were simply trying to control other Countries choices.
